Steve Sarkisian, Quinn Ewers on Texas in CFP: âWe can play with anyone in the countryâ
It didn’t take long after No. 7 Texas defeated Oklahoma State 49-21 for the Big 12 championship on Saturday before talked turned to the Longhorns chances for a College Football Playoff berth.
“In my opinion, we can play with anyone in the country,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told ABC as soon as they game was over. “We’re a very versatile team. We play good defense. We played good offense. We play good on special teams. At the end of the day, we’d love the opportunity. We’ll see what happens.”
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers believed the Longhorns showed their worth on Saturday.
Yall saw it,” Ewers, who threw for a career-high 452 yards and four scores in the win, told ABC. “This team is a really good second-half team that we just played.
“We came out, and we were a first-half and a second-half team, so it is going to be hard for those guys to make a decision on whether we should be in or not. I think today we really proved a point that in a championship game, we play at a very, very high level.”
The Longhorns (12-1, No. 7 CFP) will leave the Big 12 with bookend titles, and four overall. They also won it in the league’s inaugural 1996 season, in 2005 when they were last national champs and in 2009 before playing in the BCS national championship game.
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, who before the season when addressing a crowd of Texas Tech supporters publicly rooted against the departing Longhorns, said Saturday that Texas would “certainly deserve consideration” for a playoff spot and the league would strongly support it.
Texas fans booed Yormark and were chanting “SEC!” during the trophy presentation.
